Some great advice here 💖New mama.
Fresh baby.
And cue Breastfeeding...

I see you, new mama, trying to wrap your head around all the breastfeeding information out there, searching and posting in the breastfeeding groups for help.

It seems so right and obvious for US, the adults, to need to be in control of the breastfeeding relationship. We must assume authority, as the parent, the educated elder in this relationship, and guide our child to our breast, squish up our nipples, and shove it perfectly into our baby's mouths so they can get a nice latch. We must find the perfect position to ensure good flow, good baby posture, to avoid Torticollis, to get a deep latch....

Or do we?

Allow me to introduce you to Laid-Back Breastfeeding or Biological Nurturing/Nursing. A concept that has been around since the beginning of time, but something we have lost sight of.

Babies are born primal. In our modern world, us as humans, the adults, the know-everythings, have lost the intunement that we were born with and have become conditioned by society. Our instincts do not always serve us completely with the indoctrination and the sway from biological norms.

Our babies will literally crawl from our pubic symphysis to our breast... does that not indicate to you how powerful and instinctual these little beings are? Just seconds old, and capable of so much.

The concept of laid-back breastfeeding and biological nursing, is that we allow our babies to be in control of their latch and their position and a lot of times, for babies struggling with a good latch in any position, this could be the ideal for them. Even babies with ties may be able to find a position on their own, that allows them to get a solid latch, and remove milk from the breast, flawlessly.

In the 80s, health care providers began teaching moms not to breastfeeding laying down, that they should only be nursing in an upright position. Since 2010, our society has slowly seen a rise in biological nursing and wouldn't you know, ITS WORKING!

Our strong grip on our babies when trying to get a good position, while leaving some of their body parts dangling such as their legs, can lead them to respond negatively to breastfeeding, because they are uncomfortable! This is known as dorsal feeding.

You can initiate laid-back breastfeeding by quite literally, laying back and relaxing! Your head, neck and shoulders should be supported and it's preferable to be slightly elevated, in a bed, or on a comfortable chair/couch. Put baby tummy to tummy with their feet facing towards yours and allow them to root around and find your nipple and find their ideal latch. Talk to your baby, encourage your baby, bond with your baby.

This reduces stress in mama and baby.

This will not be the simple solution to everyone's issues, and you should absolutely see an IBCLC if you are having serious problems, but we hope it can be a quick fix for many mamas out there, struggling and wondering what in the world they are doing wrong.

Have you ever wondered what that thick, white layer on a fresh, new baby is.....?

Well, this waxy substance is called Vernix Caseosa - and it is a result of an important secretion - of a special oil - created in baby’s sebaceous glands.

Vernix typically begins to accumulate in the last trimester of pregnancy and is thought to not only protect the baby in utero, but it also serves as a mechanism of defense after baby is born.

In the past, as soon as baby emerged from its protective womb, it was quickly whisked away from its mother - to have that “gunk” wiped off, be given its first bath, have a whole series of tests taken, procedures done, and injections given.

Luckily, research has shown that (beyond leaving the baby alone with its mother) delaying baby’s first bath- and allowing that vernix to reside on the skin - has a number of health benefits!

•It has antimicrobial properties.
Recent studies have shown that vernix contains antimicrobial amino acids that block invasive bacteria present in the amniotic fluid from meconium contamination. After baby is born, these amino acids work to protect against harmful bacteria such as: B. streptococcus, E. coli, Staph aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Listeria monocytogenes, Serratia marcescens, and Klebsiella pneumonia.

•Vernix has wound healing properties.
It has been shown to help with the quick regeneration of skin following a wound. In fact, the use of vernix with skin grafting on burn victims is currently being investigated!

•It moisturizes and hydrates baby’s skin.
The newborn’s integumentary system undergoes immediate changes following birth, including dehydration. Because of its high water content, vernix acts as a natural moisturizer for your baby, protecting its skin from dryness and environmental exposure.

•It can help regulate baby’s body temperature.
There is only very rarely a need for a warmer and lights! Babies almost always do better skin to skin on their mother (even tiny preemies). Studies show that infants who have it washed off have a significantly higher rate of heat loss.

As the movement toward evidence-based practice has become standard, more hospitals are no longer bathing infants.✨

So, when you deliver your baby, don’t be surprised if they arrive with a thick coat of vernix. It is there for a reason! Instead of washing it off, use that time to snuggle up to your baby and enjoy the magic of skin-to-skin..... celebrating this perfection in its entirety.

*And if you are a friend or a family member of someone who chooses not to bathe their baby after birth, make sure you support - and even celebrate them - for working so hard to keep their new baby healthy. ✨💛
