Vasa praevia is very rare, affecting between 1 in 1,200 and 1 in 5,000 pregnancies.

✧

In normal pregnancies, the blood vessels from the umbilical cord will insert directly into the placenta and will have the protection of the umbilical cord.

✧

But in cases of vasa praevia, these vessels are not protected and they instead go across or are near the entrance to the birth canal, beneath the baby.

✧

These blood vessels are very delicate, and can cause blood loss to the baby if they tear before the baby’s birth.

✧

This is not something that is routinely scanned for during pregnancy due to its rarity(another reason to keep waters intact instead of artificially rupturing them).

✧

The 2 main causes of vasa previa are velamentous insertions (where the cord inserts directly into the membranes, leaving unprotected vessels running to the placenta) and vessels crossing between lobes of the placenta such as in succenturiate or bilobate placentas.
